Be Charitable With Cryptocurrency

Many of us routinely write checks to important causes that are close to our hearts. By doing so, we see the benefits of our generosity firsthand. On the other hand, when you make a future gift, you ensure the success of Tulane for generations to come—and in the ever-evolving digital age, cryptocurrency is a great way to do so.

If you own Bitcoin or Ethereum, chances are it is worth more than what you paid for it. Many investors have a very low-cost basis and should evaluate the tax implications before cashing in.

One impactful option that can save you on taxes: using cryptocurrency to support our mission.

Your Benefits

Your cryptocurrency gift to Tulane University qualifies for an income tax deduction for its fair market value, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) with a five-year carryover. If you have held your cryptocurrency for more than a year, you also avoid the capital gains tax you would have paid if you sold it.

Your gift will continue to advance Tulane University as a global leader in research, entrepreneurship and innovation. If you have an interest in designating your gift for a school, unit, college or fund, or to establish a named fund, please contact the Office of Gift Planning for additional assistance.

2 Simple Steps

Step 1: Ask if the charitable organization accepts gifts of cryptocurrency (ours does). Alternatively, if you have a donor advised fund, confirm with them if you are able to transfer cryptocurrency to your account. Then you will be able to recommend a grant to charitable organizations.

Step 2: Transfer your cryptocurrency. Work with the charitable organization or your donor advised fund provider to make the transfer via their online wallet tool. We partner with NYDIG to accept our cryptocurrency donations. Contact us at giftplanning@tulane.edu to get transfer instructions and information about gifts of cryptocurrency.

This gift is right for you if:

  • You would like to receive a federal income tax deduction in the year you make your gift.
  • You would like to avoid capital gains tax.
  • You would like to make an impact on our mission.

An Example of How It Works

Longtime Tulane supporters Kevin and Sheila have two goals. First, they want to make sure Tulane receives support during their lifetimes, and second, they would like their legacy to continue after they are gone. Kevin and Sheila make a $50,000 donation of cryptocurrency to start their endowment. After conversion, the donation is invested. Since donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, Kevin and Sheila do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it from their taxes. Each year, a portion of the income from the invested money will be used to support our mission in Kevin and Sheila's honor.
